Stone Soup 2018

Our sixth annual Stone Soup fundraiser happened on March 14, 2018, at the Manitoba Hydro Place Gallery in downtown Winnipeg over the lunch hour.

Twelve featured chefs prepared tasty soups and the community came together to support the health and well-being of Manitoba school children and youth.

For a small donation, Stone Soup patrons received tickets to try three soups. They received a ballot to vote for their favourite. We also had four celebrity judges on site to choose the “best” soup based on a number of factors (eg; taste, presentation, etc.). Our judges this year were Ron Brown of Boys & Girls Clubs of Winnipeg, Monica Giesbrecht of HTFC Planning & Design, Susan Ainley of the Downtown Winnipeg Biz, and Jane Puchniak.

The People’s Choice soup ladle went to: 17 Wing Food Services’ chefs MCpl. Fraser Ashmead and Cpl. Paul Heatherington for their soup: Mexican Chipotle Bacon Corn Chowder with Cilantro and Sugared Tortilla Crisps

The Judge’s Choice soup ladles (it was a tie) went to: Red River College School of Hospitality & Culinary Arts’ chefs Karl Oman and his students for their soup: Holiday Sweet Potato Turkey with “Stuffing” Focaccia

Rudy’s Eat & Drink’s chef Alexandra Simpson for her soup: Smoked Chicken and Bacon Chowder with Cornbread Croutons and Fire Roasted Corn and Poblano Salsa

Funds raised at the event helps provide children and teens in Manitoba schools with healthy meals and snacks every day through non-profit nutrition programs.  Every nutrition program is a safe space where kids can find encouragement, get to know friendly adults, learn about nutrition, gain food skills and volunteer credits, and come together with other kids of various ages and backgrounds.

Our event was emceed by CBC’s Sabrina Carnevale. We thank the CBC for their special support of this event, including a live broadcast during the noon hour of the event.

Our Stone Soup volunteer committee receives all of the credit for putting on this wonderful event. We’d like to send our appreciation to our volunteer organizer Viola Prowse as well as committee members Norma Alberg and Carolyn Duhamel. We also thank the volunteers who came out in support of the event on March 14th. We could not organize this event without our dedicated volunteers!
