Manitoba Home Nutrition and Learning Pilot Program

On June 15th, 2020, the province announced the Home Nutrition and Learning Pilot program as part of the Manitoba Protection Plan, to support Manitobans affected by COVID-19. The pilot, which will launch in 2 community sites in Winnipeg this week and 3 other sites in the province in early July, aims to reach 6,000 students and will run until the end of September in all locations.

Since 2001, the Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba has been dedicated to helping school children learn, grow, and succeed by supporting meal and snack programs in Manitoba schools. The registered dietitians from the Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba were consulted for their experience and knowledge, to develop the menu and resources for the pilot program.

The Council will continue to work with school divisions and schools across Manitoba during the 2020-21 school year, to ensure students all across the province have access to nutritious foods that support and enhance their learning.

Working Together, A Magazine of the Winnipeg Foundation published a great article called Building Bright Futures, One Bite At A Time: Students Can Focus On Studies Thanks To Healthy Food Provided By Child Nutrition Council

“It’s reassuring for parents to know if their child didn’t eat breakfast at home, then they can come to school and even if they miss school breakfast, they can still have a snack that’s a healthy choice for them to eat. Parents really appreciate the wide variety of fruits and vegetables we’re able to offer for their kids here,” Lendhart Mair says. “Sometimes parents are even able to help with us with the breakfast program and do some volunteering.”
