During this year’s Stone Soup fundraiser, we raised over $15,000 to contribute to our province-wide network of nutrition programs. That’s enough to cover the cost of about 11,500 breakfasts, 7500 lunches, or 25000 snacks! For further information on this year’s Stone Soup, we’re happy to share a guest post from one of our dedicated student volunteers who is also currently interning with the Council for high school credit. Read on!

On March 12th, 2014 the Child Nutrition Council held their 2nd Annual Stone Soup fundraiser in the Manitoba Hydro Lobby in downtown Winnipeg. All proceeds from Stone Soup are used to support child nutrition programs all around Manitoba. These programs most often provide free breakfast or snacks to students at school, so that every student has the chance to start the day off right. Volunteers, including Human Ecology and Nutrition students from the University of Manitoba were a great help to make this year’s Stone Soup an even bigger success than last year. I also had the honour to be a volunteer and see everything happen.

With eleven talented restaurants cooking up soups of all varieties (including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free) and “side dishes” of pita, bannock, and fruit, it seemed that Winnipeggers couldn’t help but to stop, make a donation, and get some soup! Here’s a list of what was available to try:

  • Inferno’s Bistro – Roasted Orange Pepper and Tomato Bisque, drizzled with cucumber tzaziki
  • Terrace in the Park (Winner of the silver spoon for the 2nd year in a row!) – Snow Crab and Corn Chowder with tarragon
  • Stella’s Cafe – African Peanut and Sweet Potato
  • The Current – Strong Arm Beer and Cheddar
  • Neechi Commons – Three Sisters
  • Chocolatier Constance Popp – Dark Chocolate, Mango and Butternut Squash
  • Elements – Ramen (aka Noodle Bowl)
  • Deseo Bistro – Wild Mushroom and Shallot Bisque with mushroom and rice puff and porcini oil
  • Frenchway Cafe – Chicken Basquaise
  • Rudy’s Eat and Drink – Cremini Mushroom
  • Red River College School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts – Potato Bacon and Chicken Chowder
  • pita from Baraka Bakery and bannock from Neechi Commons

Stone Soup 14 - RWBIn addition to being a great fundraising lunch, Stone Soup was also a field trip for grade 5 students from Sister MacNamara School, who joined us for the day to try out some creative movement and dance activities with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

The St. James Super Singers (grade 8 – 12) also attended Stone Soup as performers, showcasing their amazing skill in jazz performance. We were pleased to host both of these student groups, who added incredibly to the feel of the day.  Overall, the day was full of the spirit of collaboration, and everyone was happy to be getting soup on a brisk Winnipeg day.

After another successful Stuff the School Bus event we would like to extend a hearty thanks to our community. Your support means that more children are able to receive healthy foods in a nurturing environment during the day.

Looking Back on Our First Annual Stone Soup Fundraiser

Events | Comments Off on Looking Back on Our First Annual Stone Soup Fundraiser | Jul 8, 2013

On March 13, 2013 we held our First Annual Stone Soup fundraiser in downtown Winnipeg. Why are we thinking about this today? Well, we are finally getting to say thank you!

Stone Soup

For our first run, we could not have asked for more success – together with our community we raised over $14,000. The lobby of the Manitoba Hydro building was packed with people for hours, and we sold out of every single soup before the event was done. Our partners and participants were incredibly generous and supportive, and we are looking forward to working with everyone again.

We also had the pleasure of hosting guests of honour from Sister MacNamara school. These creative students wrote a book for us about their day at Stone Soup. Take a look through selections from the book here. Enjoy!

By the way, follow us on facebook for information on our upcoming awareness event Stuff the School Bus at Polo Park mall’s centre court, this August 22-24th.
